Braid hairstyles – once you’ve gotten the hang of it, they’ll become your go-to style, and Kim Kardashian just proves that. In fact, all the Kardashian-Jenner girls do – they’re always rocking these glam and sassy designs.

If you want some inspiration on how to wear your braid hairstyles a little bolder, why not check some of these out? With tutorials to go with them, you may just find your next every-day look. They’re not all super difficult either!

21 Braid Hairstyles

1 – Dutch Lace Braided Ponytail

The Dutch lace braid is a beautiful one, and you can customise the actual braid part of it to match whatever look you’re going for. You could have a fishtail braid in this lace kind too, it’s just the process of adding more hair to just one side of the braid. With a traditional French braid, you add hair to both sides, but with this Dutch lace braid, you’re adding to just one, giving you this dropped effect.

You can pull out the edges of the braid to give it a more boho, roughed-up look, or leave it sleek and smart just like you can see here. With this one, the hair as been added to the underneath side of the braid, and not the top side (the side closes to the top of the head). It makes for the perfect addition to any ponytail style.

2 – Braid-in-Braid

What could be better than one braid, than a braid within a braid? And that’s just what this look offers – a peekaboo smaller braid peeking through the bigger braid.

It’s another simple look – you simply take a thinner section of the hair and braid it first, and then incorporate it into one of the three sections you then twist together to make your bigger braid. We love the ombre effect that’s been used on this look, but that’s an optional extra obviously, and you could even look at adding more peekaboo braids too.

3 – Waterfall Twist Braid

If you want your braid to last more than just a day, don’t braid it loosely. Instead, apply a much tighter braid. This will give more than one day’s worth of wear out of it, and you can also ‘liven’ the look up the next day. No one will ever need to know you’ve actually worn the same hair for two days rather than washing it …

On day one, create a tight braid look, and on day two, when the hair is starting to fall free a little, use your fingers to tease some of the look out, and pull the braid apart a tad too. This will give you a more boho / free-flowing vibe, which essentially gives you two looks to rock over two days. So smart, right?

4 – Simple Dutch Braided Updo

If you’re struggling to work out how to do a braid, don’t be afraid to call on the internet to help you. There are plenty of people out there who struggle to create these, and we’ve already admitted that we are those people, and one trick that we like to use is watching Youtube videos … over and over again.

What starts out as one video soon turns into a two-hour long braiding frenzy, and before you know it we’ve learned three new braid hairstyles, how to reupholster a living room chair, and how to make DIY Halloween decorations using just toilet roll tubes and PVA glue … The internet is a magical thing!

5 – Stacked Bubble Braid

This clever stacked bubble braid gives you a way of redesigning your hair to look totally different from anything you may have been brave enough to try before. It’s actually quite a simple process too, starting with a high ponytail on the top of the head, before adding a braid to a smaller section, right in the middle.

Bring the entire ponytail together, and add smaller elastics at regular intervals down the length of it. Just make sure you can see that initial first braid falling right down the centre of the pony.

6 -Bowed + Beautiful Braid

Sometimes all you need to do to liven up an older braided style is to rough-it-up a bit, and that’s basically what makes this look as cute as it is. That’s obviously helped by the addition of that beautiful bow. Bows are underrated hair accessories, don’t you think?

The top half of the head has been French-braided, and the braid itself has been carried on down the length to fall right down the back. When the hair has been securely tied with elastics, simply pull and tug at the braided sections of the hair to pull it out like you can see here. Such a stunning braided look!

7 – Braided Bouffant

If you have long enough hair, you can create a simple braid that can be used to go right across the head, almost like a headband of sorts. If you don’t have long enough hair, you can always fake it with hair extensions. Just make sure they’ve been dyed with the same shade and tone as the rest of your hair.

We love this braided bouffant, but you could create a whole league of braid hairstyles with this headband-design. You could even wear the braid headband with your hair down, or as a simple addition to a roughed-up, day-two pony too. There are plenty of ways to customise it.

8 – French Braided Half-Up

Here’s another look that would be simply perfect for day-two hair – a half-up, half-down French braid that’s loose and lovely. An easy starter braid if this is your first attempt at getting creative.

The looser the French braid, the more bo-ho this design will look, and the easier it will be for you recreate too. Trying to get your braids nice and tight the first few times you do them is hard work, but you’ll seen get the hang of things.

9 – Easy Twisted Braid

This easy braided hairstyle is much simpler to recreate than you’d first have thought, You braid the hair straight down the middle, twist it around and under, and then secure with pins. You could also braid to one side if right down the middle wasn’t quite your thing, and you could easily add a number of hair accessories to bring the whole thing to life, much like you can see here. We think this would make for great bridal hair!

One trick that experts suggest you use is to try and French braid your hair without using a mirror. If you can do it blind, you’ll be able to it in no time at all, and it’s often easier than working in reverse. Trying to figure it out in our reflection always confuses us!

10 – Twisted Rose Braid

Another very clever braid, it’s a braid in which you allow sections to fall free and down, giving the impression that the hair isn’t really twisted in the braid at all. At the end of it, the length allows this hair queen to twist it around to make it look like a flower – some kind of rose, perhaps?

If you’re struggling with your hair, getting it to stay in place, for example, add some dry shampoo into the mix. It gives the hair something to stick to, and especially works if you apply it to dirty hair first. Dry shampoo has a lot of uses these days, we would highly advise that you get yourself some!

11 – Upside-Down Braided Top Knot

If you know how to French braid but just are bored with the way you do it, liven it up. No, we don’t mean a brand new colour, although we do love this bright orange pop. We’re talking about braiding from a slightly different angle …

In this case, upside down! Rather than braiding the top of your head, tip your head upside down and work from the base of the neck up. Finish it all off with a messy bun so you can show off the braid, and what do you have? An easy style that you already know how to do, done in a slightly different way that makes you look super awesome.

12 – Side Braid Elsa Combo

It’s almost that time of year again … time for us to embrace our inner Elsa, get used to the cold, and belt out our favourite song really loud. Are you ready? Let it go, let it go … Okay, okay, we’ll stop now. (We know our voices suck!)

This side braid Elsa style is so beautiful, we’re adding it to our lust list. It’s a lace braid, hair only added to one side of the braid, but done really close to the side of the face. It basically frames the face, covering one ear. At least that ear will be warm when the temperature plummets!

13 – Double-Braided Braid

For when one braid just isn’t enough, liven up your braid hairstyles by having multiple braids. We’re not talking about cornrows, or those multiple braids you once had on holiday with your mum and Dad, but an intertwined braided look, just like you can see here.

Two French braids have been completed either side of the face, and they’ve been twisted together at the bottom, before securely being tied in place with those miniature clear elastics you can get. There’s normally quite a few of them in a bag, so there’s plenty of opportunity to practice.

*We’d recommend always having spare elastics in your handbag … ours have a habit of breaking because we have thick hair!

14 – Accented French Braid

Another face-framing look, how pretty (and SIMPLE!) is this accented French braid? It’s a regular French braid, but kept tight and close to the side of the face, showing off all the balayage blonde and brown tones in our hair which we obviously love.

Here’s a simple trick for when you don’t like your securing elastics to show – wrap a tiny section of your hair around it, and tuck it back into the elastic again. No one would ever need to know it was there.

15 – Braided Low-Knot

There are a lot of advantages to learning how to braid your hair, whether you choose these stunning braid hairstyles, or you keep things nice and simple perhaps, with just one braid running down your back. Styles like these are a great way to wear your hair away from your face, and still look pretty, cute, and feminine at the same time.

Not only that, when you let your braids loose the morning after the night before, you’ll find you have wonderful waves to rock for the day, perfect for those lazy, boho days when you can’t really be bothered to do anything much at all with your ‘do.

16 – Braids + Mermaid Waves

One of the easiest braids to start with is the fishtail braid (we think), and working with four strands, even when you’re adding to it as you work through the hair, just seems to be so much easier to achieve than when you try to work with three strands. Very odd, right?

If you struggle (like we do), them embrace the mess! If your hair comes out more boho than sleek, run with it. Pull other sections of the hair out as well, and make it look like that was your braid hairstyles plan in the first place. No one needs to know! 😉

17 – Carousel Braid

If you can’t have damp or slightly wet hair when you try to work your hair into braids, make it dirty hair instead. Hair that hasn’t been washed for a couple of days is easily twisted into a braided hair look, and because it’s a little dirty / greasy, the hair will be more likely to stay in the design you’ve created, rather than falling loose because it’s clean, soft, and flyaway.

Another great tip you should try when trying to create these braid hairstyles is to get yourself a spray bottle and fill it with clean, cool water. You can spray as you braid, making it easier to finish it and get it looking sleek and smooth.

18 – Fancy Fishtail Braid

As well as spritzing your hair with water as you go, another great tip you should try when you’re trying to create these braid hairstyles is to apply a light spritzing of hairspray as you go too. You’d use hairspray to finish your look at the end, so why not add a touch as you go, making sure everything holds together nice and neatly like it should do.

Any loose layers or pieces will be less likely to fall free when you use this great hairspray tip, and you’ll also find your ‘do will last a little longer too. Don’t say we don’t bring you only the very best hair cheats and tricks! 😉

19 – French Braid Ponytail

You can leave your braid hairstyles in overnight if you learn how to maintain them properly. We know how annoying it is when you have great braids one day, you go to sleep, and you wake up the next day, hoping your braids will still be in perfect order, but instead finding that they make you look as if you’ve slept in a hedge overnight.

In order to maintain your sleek and clean braid hairstyles overnight, replace your regular cotton (or other material) pillowcase with one that’s made from a softer material. One material that we’ve had great success with is silk. The silky material glides over the hair rather than pulling at it, and this means any look you want to leave in for the next day will be safe, not just these beautiful braids.

20 – Twisted Fish Tail Down ‘Do

Some people find certain braids quite difficult to master alone, and we can put our hands up to admit that French braids really aren’t a strong point of ours. If we want to have French braids in our hair, we always need to ask someone else to do it for us. They’re just impossible … Well, we think they are anyway!

Braid Hairstyles

One tip that hair professionals use to get the perfect braid hairstyles is to do it when the hair is still a little damp. Not soaking wet, but definitely not dry. By doing this, your braid is likely to be neater and with less falling-out edges. We love falling-out edges, don’t get us wrong, but not when we’re looking for a clean and sleek hair look.

21 – Double French Braids On Top

And above all else, practice makes perfect. If you don’t try, give it a break and come back to it. You’ll generally find that you pick it up after a few attempts, and before long you’ll be able to braid your own hair in your sleep, making it your next go-to style before you head off to work in the morning.
