Valentines Day will soon be upon us and whether you’re happily coupled up or sitting on the shelf of singledom, don’t let your nails let the side down. Here’s 55 Valentines day nail designs we love…
And we think you might love them too!
1 – Simply Love
They’re easy, simple and to the point so we love these Valentines day nail designs. With a nail pen and a steady hand, you can write the word ‘love’ across two letters as you can see here, and the backdrop could be any colours you like.
If you don’t like the pink, black, white or gold glitter you can see here, mix them up for any other colour you like. Just make sure you use a contrasting colour to write your love note!
2 – X’s & O’s
We love everything about this nail design, from the love-heart with ‘D+A’ scribbled inside, to the matt black nails with the little pink hearts.
The chevron design is easily completed if you buy yourself some craft scissors with a zig-zag edge. Cutting tape or nail foils with the zig-zag craft scissors, mask off the area once you’ve let your base colour dry. Once the top colour has completely dried, peel off the tape or foil and you should be left with something a little like this.
It might take you a couple of attempts to get it perfectly straight and un-smudged like you see here but practice makes perfect as they say!
3 – Pretty in Pink
Valentine’s day is all about the colour pink so why not keep things simple with your nails for this year and add a two-toned look like this heart design pattern.
Use a glittery pink on the bottom and a pastel pink for the top to achieve this easier look. You could either draw the hearts on by hand, or use a stencil to guide you. These hearts are actually very simple to achieve with two blobs and a flick of the wrist.
4 – Love & Lace
We love the white love-letter nail and we think it sums up Valentine’s day perfectly! We also love the lace and nude effect, and the red lips on nude polish too. In fact, there’s nothing we didn’t love about these nails. A definite winner for V-day if you ask us!
Keep the rest of the nails nude if you just want a subtle look, or go all out and have each nail slightly different. That’s the fun about looks like this – you’re free to do whatever your creativity will allow for.
5 – Hearts in a Row
For when you don’t want to make things too obvious, we love the one white nail with the five teeny-tiny love hears running down the centre.
You could keep the rest of the nails as simple or as nude as you like but with that one statement piece, could make you feel in the mood for love in no time at all.
6 – Love Heart Mash Up
It looks complicated but we promise you it’s not. To recreate this love hear mash up, add a pink base coat and allow to dry. Using masking tape or nail foils, mask off to just free corner diagonal section you can see and use a pastel pink shade.
Using a nail pen or a dotted nail tool, add two blobs of the darker and colour pinks in layers (waiting for them to dry in between). When you move the two blobs in a downwards motion with a tooth pick or other sharp tool, you get this love-heart shape.
A good helping of top coat over the top will help to seal this in, and you may find that Shellac nails will last you longer.
7 – Simply Love
If you wanted something simple, you can’t ask for more simple than this. The nails have been left neutral just with a buff and polish, and tiny red heart nail embellishments have been added to the top.
Whack a top-coat on over the top and you’re pretty much done.
If you’ve got a steady hand, you could always try painting the red love hearts if you don’t have any embellishments to hand.
8 – Sculpted Valentines Nails
Admittedly, these Valentine’s day nail designs aren’t the most practical but they sure do look good. Sculpted, shaped nails like this are perfect for these special occasions. Plus they look super-shiny!
You could, of course, always keep things somewhat simpler by having square tips. We do love the hand drawn hearts on these cuties, and there’s that one statement nail we keep talking about again.
9 – Lady in Red
Let’s keep it simple. You’ve got the red love hearts, you’ve got a bit of white lace, and you’ve got ‘love’ written write across the centre of them all. What’s not to love?
These are perfect, classic and elegant Valentines day nail designs and super easy to achieve too. If you don’t have time to run to the salon, handprint the hearts if you have a steady hand, or cut a stencil design out of tape. Just make sure you let the nails dry properly first otherwise you’ll end up with smudges and smears.
10 – Written With Love
There are those love letters we spoke about earlier on but that’s not the feature we want to point out on these Valentines day nails. In fact, for this one, it’s the script that we love, pink lips optional.
The look is easier to achieve than you’d think. With some rubbing alcohol (or vodka, we’ve worked out that works just as well), get a piece of newspaper and use the print on that to create your design. Over a freshly painted nail, add a smear of alcohol and then place the print, face-down (ink-down). Give it a good, light rub with the alcohol on the other side and when you peel the newspaper away, you should find that the print has been left on the nail. Keep things in check by using a quick slick of top-coat and you have love-letter nails everyone will be envious of… Even if you are single.
11 – Black Heart
For when your heart is black and cold, or you’re just sick of everyone talking about Valentine’s Day already, why not opt for a black heart? It’s simple, to the point, incorporates everything you’d want to incorporate for Valentines day nails – easy, peasy, beautiful!
You’ve got a plain black, white and baby pink base to start with, and over just the two central nails, a black heart has been hand-painted over the top. A quick coat of gloss will keep things super shiny but you could always consider Shellac nails for a long-lasting style.
12 – From Paris With Love
Paris is the city of love so why not opt for Paris on your nails? The Eiffel tower is actually a simple design – it’s just a triangle essentially. With red nails for the rest, use a base coat of white before getting creative with your designs.
If you don’t have a steady enough hand to achieve a look like this, and you don’t ave time to go to the salon either, look for French-themed nail embelishments. We’ve seen some pretty cute lace-design ones on Amazon!
13 – Bright & Beautiful
No one said your Valentines day nails had to be pink, red, or any of those other traditional love-associated shades. We love this coral, tangerine, peachy-looking design.
Here’s a little hint if you’re going to try this at home – put some Vaseline around the edges of your nails so when you go ‘over the lines’ (which I do every time) it’ll be wipe-off rather than smudge-off.
14 – Sealed with a Kiss
If you’re going for something bright or bolshy like these beautiful pink and purple Valentines day nail designs, the nail bed can become stained once you take the colour off. We love this look but all that soaking in lemon juice afterwards to get rid of the staining doesn’t impress us much…
If you find glitter or dark coloured polishes too much for your delicate nails, put a layer of PVA glue down before you add the colour. It’ll just peel off once you’re done! It’s a perfect tip for a one-night affair and you know you won’t be up early enough / sober enough to remove your polish before work the next day!
15 – Red Tipped
Red, pointed, fierce. If you’ve got no one to love this Valentine’s day, love yourself instead and treat yourself to this super-glam, super-modern manicure instead.
Who cares who’s boyfriend bought what when you’ve got talons that look this good?
16 – Lots of Love
It’s the day of love so let your nails be covered in it! Teeny-tiny love hearts can be hard to paint on free hand so cheat and add a few little teeny-tiny dots instead. It has the same effect. Plus no one would ever know.
Here’s another tip for you – the rounded tip of a hair pin / grip is perfect for creating those little dots of colour!
17 – Negative Effect Heart
These Valentines day nail designs are amazing. We especially love the negative heart glitter nail!
If you want great nails like this but have a nasty habit of chipping them, give an extra layer of protection when you add your top coat. When you apply the first layer, only apply it to the top half of your nail. When you add the second nail, add it to the entire nail. You’ll have an extra layer of strength without the thickness or drying time of multiple layers.
18 – Louboutin Nails
If he can’t afford to buy you Louboutin shoes this Valentine’s day, treat yourself to some Louboutin nails instead.
Using red tips will help you get that under-nail look, and simply paint the top of the nail with a black matte. We’ve also tried the look with a glossy black too and it looks just as fabulous.
We’d love to say that you can achieve this look by simply painting the underneath of your nails but we’ve tried it and it’s messy and tricky! Even at the salon they have a hard time!
19 – Glitter Ombre Valentines Day Nails
If you want ombre nails like this, there’s an easy way to get it. Grab yourself a clean makeup sponge and paint three stripes getting deeper and stronger in colour and intensity.
Once you’ve got it about right, press the sponge onto your nails and you should be left with something that looks a little like.
There are plenty of tutorial on YouTube for ombre nails using this method so we suggest you give them a peek!
20 – It’s a Love Thing
Do you want to know the best bit about having multiple nail designs such as this? If you chip one or smudge one, it doesn’t matter!
If you smudged the black – LOVE nail and didn’t have time to go through all that effort again, you could just paint it black and leave it like that. Or add a glitter top coat for some added sparkle. Sometimes your nails don’t need to be quite so perfect.
21 – Be Mine?
Don’t forget about your tootsies? This super cute love-heart sweet inspired look is perfect for little nails – nail biters and toenails alike!
The look is very simple to achieve with the help of paint, a couple of tools and a steady hand but (and here’s a sneaky hint) you can buy these as nail transfers online. We know because we’ve used them…
22 – Black, Pink & Monochrome
We know, we’ve shown you some like before but honestly, we think you should have another look. This is from another nail designer giving you proof that nails just like this are a hot topic for right now.
Those chevron-designs can be quite difficult to get right by hand so here’s a sneaky cheat – you can buy nail foils and just pain over the top!
23 – Scribbled Hearts
We loved everything about these nails from the pearlescent shimmery pink background to the scribbled black ‘lace’ hearts over the top.
Again, you can buy transfers to stick on if you’re not patient enough to free-hand these. We’ve got them!
24 – A Pop of Pink
We know that pastel pinks and romantic hues are all the rage for Valentines day nails but honestly, sometimes we just want super bright and shiny!
Go as bold or as bright as you dare! What’s the point in having fabulously dolled-up nails if no one’s going to see them anyway? Plus we secretly love the one feature nail here – the white background with the bright pink love heart and little black dots. It’s everything you could want!
25 – Negative Pink Hearts
For something a little different this Valentine’s day, opt for a negative space nail instead. It still has all the characteristics of romantic nails – pink, heart, cute, girlie, etc. But it’s a little different. It’s a stand-out look.
This is a look best achieved by a nail artist in a salon, especially if you’ve never tried this kind of thing before. I found it quite hard the first few times I gave it a shot and in the end, I gave up and admitted defeat, paying someone to do it much better than I could.
You’ll need to affix a heart-shaped stencil of sorts with this look to paint around it. Alternatively, you could try it free-hand. You’re more talented (and patient) than me if you achieve it!
27 – Nautical Love Affair
We love this nautical look, it’s almost fifties, pinup inspired. You could even opt for rounded tips if you’re not sure of the super-square ones you can see here. In fact, you could probably achieve this look with almost any style or shape of nail, even really short ones.
(For the biters… Like me!)
You’ve got red nails, gold shimmering / glittering nails, and a white nail. Add some blue stripes (or nail foils if you’re no good at painting) and either paint or affix a heart-shaped embellishment over the top. The red works really well but you could play around with colours here. Blue over red, red over white, blue over gold… You get the idea.
28 – Black Cats & Hearts
Two things I love most in the world – hearts and cats. Combine the two and what do you have? Cat nails! Perfectly for the crazy cat lovers out there this Valentine’s day!
You’re combining that negative space idea with simple black nails here, and we think the look is perfect for those that have no one but their cat to smother with love, adoration and affection. Like me…
29 – Passionately Pink
Valentine’s Day is all about love and kisses, so smother your nails in kisses like the cuties you can see here.
These lips are easily drawn free hand if you’re good with a paintbrush but I cheated and went for lip-effect transfers instead when I copied the look. No one would ever know the difference… Just saying! 😉
(It’s okay to cheat sometimes you know!)
30 – Romantic Red
Red, glitter, love hearts – three things guaranteed to make your Valentines day nails perfect.
Glitter is a total nightmare to get off once you’re done with it but here’s a helpful hint – wrap your nails in some cotton wool soaked in nail varnish remover before wrapping the tips of your fingers in foil. Give it ten minutes or so and you’ll find the glitter is much easier to come off.
31 – Sweet Tweet Love
We love everything about these Valentines day nails – the flowers, the hearts, the kips, the cute little Tweety-bird.
Why not let the kids get creative on your nails? They’d probably do a better job anyway!
32 – The Finishing Touches
Sometimes it’s all about the finishing touches and when it comes to your nails, there’s no exception.
Use all the embellishments you can get your hands on, or just go simple and add a few finishing touches. It’s up to you – these are your nails remember? Why not start a style trend instead of following one?
33 – Ring Finger Bling
If you want him to pop the question this year (FINALLY!) why not draw attention to your ring finger and get him to finally understand what it is you want.
Add gems and sparkles until the entire nail is covered (although be prepared to carry nail glue with you just in case one falls off), and he won’t be able to stop looking at it. It’ll reflect the light and grab his attention that’s for sure!
34 – Passionately Purple
It’s not pink or red but we don’t care because it works well anyway. Plus sometimes we just don’t feel like being pink and cute and girlie. These are a little more grown up Valentines day nails.
Make your Valentine’s day statement even more fresh and fierce by combining your purples and plums with a stiletto sharp finish. Because why the hell not?
35 – Jessica Rabbit Red
I love Jessica Rabbit. I don’t think I’ve ever met a man who doesn’t love Jessica Rabbit. Why not opt for Jessica Rabbit Valentine’s day nails?
Sexy, sassy, red, lips… Why not? Plus it’s a little something different from what you might have chosen before! Here’s a little tip – use the alcohol-rubbing technique to imprint the design on your nail from a drawing or stencil first. This nail design is quite difficult to freehand, especially on yourself.
36 – Simply Dotty
There’s something so very cool about these dotty Valentines day nails. Scrap embellishments or hand-drawn, make things a little dottier by making different shades of spots or dots into the shape of a heart. Simple, effective and totally cool, don’t you think?
Draw a heart on your nail, or use a stencil design, and simply dot different shades over the free space until you have covered as much or as little as you like. You could also play around with different colours, shades and even shapes. I sense a Christmas-tree inspired look for when the festive period comes back around!
37 – Love Lace
We’ve done lace but this time we’re taking it back to innocent white rather than sexy black!
If he does propose this year, you’ll want to make sure your nails look the part and these nail designs definitely look the part!
38 – Popular Culture
Valentine’s day nails done a little differently, why not pop-culture it up with these bright and bolshy beauties?
Lips, kisses, bright colours – it’s not conventional but we love them anyway. Perfect for those bright lovelies out there who want to standout from the crowd!
39 – Pastel Pink Tips
I know, I know, these aren’t traditional Valentine’s day nails either. But we love them nevertheless and for those who want to cartoon-up the event a little, these pink-tipped and almost Disney-themed cuties are just perfect.
We all love Disney. Valentine’s Day is all about love. It just makes perfect sense… Right?
40 – Red Lips
These nails are perfect. We love them. The red shininess, the white base coat, those cute little red lips. What’s not to love?
Shellac nails will ensure these look glossy and shiny for as long as you need them to, but just to be on the safe side, get them done as close to Valentine’s day as possible to ensure you can’t break one before the crucial date.
41 – Featured Nail
The lacy white design on these Valentine’s day nails instantly made us fall in love but there’s that classic example of the ring-finger featured nail business we discussed earlier on too.
Oh come on – if you’re in a relationship and you’re not married yet, theres a good chance you’re waiting for him to start paying attention to that finger anyway. Speed things up a little quicker! 😉 Grab his attention.
42 – Ace of Spades
Although not traditionally considered to be Valentine’s day nails, we kinda love these red and gold Ace of Spades inspired nails, and we actually think they’d work quite well.
Valentine’s day doesn’t always have to be about hearts, flowers, lips and kisses. Although that teeny black heart and x’s and o’s helps to romanticise the look.
43 – Pink & Grey
These aren’t two colours you would normally associate with Valentines day nails but we love the pastel, muted shades of these pink and grey nails. The love hearts and scribbled ‘love’ word helps to make them look Valentinesy.
Think outside the box this year and for your V-day nails, opt for a slightly muted shade than what you would have gone for. It’s a much more classy and sophisticated look than bright, fluorescent pink nails you might have opted for before.
44 – With a Bow on Top
A bow embellishment is such an easy way to jazz up boring nails. All you need is a bit of glue and the bow itself and in a few minutes, you have a totally different look.
It can take a bit of getting used to, and you might find that the bow gets caught in your hair at first, but for one-off events and occasions, we think these embellishments are just perfect.
45 – Glittertastic
Are these too much? We don’t think so. In fact, we think Valentine’s day is the perfect time to get sparkle-tactic!
Whatever base colour you have gone for, just add a contrasting glitter shade to complete switch up the look. We love this Barry M glittery delight, and the pinky colour certainly helps!
46 – Lacy Love
If you’re wearing lacy lingerie, you might as well be wearing lacy nails too! We love these ones and we can’t help but think these would perfectly accessorise the ultimate naughty night in!
You can buy lace transfers which will make this look easier to achieve, and go nuts with any colours you like. Just make sure you match your nails to your underwear!
47 – Pink & Silver Valentines Day Nails
Simple and to the point, these are pink nails with a hint of something different… But not a love heart in sight!
Usually we’d see these glitter ombre nails going the other way around – working along the tips rather than the base of the nail. We love that the style has been reversed here though. It just shows you how a simple change can switch the whole finish.
48 – Blue With Love
For those times when pink, red or purple just won’t do, why not look at these fabulously bright blue Valentines day nails?
We love the added depth added to these blue beauties with the layers of glitter and shimmer, and the gold shimmery hearts perfect the look brilliantly.
49 – Gold & White
A little bit different from most of the pastel and pink looks we’ve featured so far, we’re in love with these elegant and classy gold and white Valentine’s day nails. In fact, these are probably the ones we’ll be rocking this year!
We love the fact that the centre of the negative space hearts have been jazzed up with some glitter / shimmer flakes. Look closely and you’ll see they add a little something extra to the look.
50 – Everything Pink
These are those negative space nails again but this time, they have been lined with a shimmery silvery or gold tone, adding an ombre-effect glitter tip to the pinkie nail too.
Sometimes a hint of sparkle is all it takes to update your look. What better time to wear some glitter and shimmer than at Valentine’s day?
51 – Blood Red Tips
For when you’re not in the mood for hearts and flowers or bright pinks, purples and reds, try this deep blood red reverse-heart tipped look instead.
Valentine’s day nails for when you’re not celebrating with the one you love…
52 – Pastel Pinks
What’s not to fall in love with, with these cute and pink Valentines day nails?
Simple yet effective, it’s a great way to add a simple change to an existing pink manicure. We think the love hearts here look a little bit like buttons, don’t you?
53 – Hearts, Stars & Stripes
There’s only one heart here but we don’t mind. The pastel pink and cute barely-there stripes help to add a cute and lovey feel to them, don’t you think?
Who said Valentine’s day nails couldn’t be about stars and stripes anyway? We actually think these are super cute! 🙂
54 – Lips & Sparkles
Nail embellishments are an easy way to completely change the look of your nails so whatever design or colour you have gone with for your base coat, don’t be afraid to go a little nuts with the bits and pieces you stick on top.
The stars and circles work really well against the red backdrop here, and the white with lips feature nails helps to keep the design young and fun.
55 – Fifty Shades of Pink
Can’t work out which shade of pink you fancy rocking? Why not opt for more than one?
Have the nails in an ‘ombre-effect’ going from lighter to darker if you want something that stands out a little more, or keep things simple with a pastel pink and white backdrop like you can see here, with brighter pinks and glitter added for the main features.
There are a lot of looks here so if you don’t like them too fussy, pick one nail design and try that one first. You could always add more designs and features later on if you wanted to.
And just in case we hadn’t given you enough Valentines day nail designs or you were still looking for a little bit more inspiration, here’s a few more to get the creative juices flowing.
It’s the time for love so fall in love with your nails!
