The humble ponytail is one of the easiest hairstyles in the world, and that’s why so many men (and women) make it their get-ready-quick go-to style. But what happens when you’re not in the mood for something as simple as a ponytail? What happens when you want to inject a little … something into the mix? Wonder no more, ladies, here’s the answer to your questions. The easiest way to liven up that ponytail to really make it stand out from the crowd.
1 – Braided Spiral Ponytail
It’s a very simple ponytail, but with a twist. A braided twist to be exact, and one that isn’t too difficult to achieve with the right tutorial. Speaking of tutorials, there’s one for this cute look if you click on the image. You’ll be amazed at what this hair-blogger has managed to create with her intricate braiding styles, and once you’ve got the hang of it, they’ll become your next go-to look.
2 – Rainbow Pony
Hair extensions are one of the easiest ways to spice up your ponytail, and that’s when you can get the most creative too. Start with hair extensions that are your natural shade, and use hair dye, chalks, or sprays to inject some colour into the mix. Who said your ponytail hair ideas couldn’t be colourful too?
For the record, you can even buy hair extensions that have already been dyed with these rainbow shades. Here are a few that we were more than a little obsessed with …
3 – Low + Mussed Up
Low ponytail hair ideas like this one are perfect for when you just want a way to tie your hair back away from your face, while still looking pretty and elegant too. Pull some of the hair out with your fingers to give that voluminous effect at the base, and you could even consider gentle backcombing too. Leave some wavy tendrils loose to frame your face too if you want a more romantic and feminine finish to your ‘do.
4 – High + Colourful
If you’ve got hidden features to your hair, you have a reason to show it off. That’s the perfect excuse to start looking at ponytail hair ideas like this one, throwing it all up high and proud. The side-shave and undercut look was a popular one lately, and as this look shows, the growing-back stage doesn’t need to be as awful as you’d have thought.
5 – Twisted Braid Wrap Pony
For when you don’t have hair bands to hand, use your own hair instead. By taking a strand and then braiding it, you could wrap it around the rest of your hair. Pin it all in place and add a quick burst of hairspray, and you could be ready in less than five minutes. That’ll impress your boyfriend for a change!
6 – Double Braided Wraparound
And when one braid just isn’t enough, add double braids, just like this stunning look. It’s a case of sectioning your hair to being with – you’ll want the top away from the sides, and the sides away from the bottom. Then French braid (or mix it up with whatever braid you like) two lines running horizontally along the sides your head. Twirl it all around the elastic that’s keeping the bottom in that ponytail, and then slot the top section in with a little volume behind it, and you have a fabulous and glamorous look that can easily be worn for a while number of occasions and events.
7 – Double-Dutched
Of course, you could always go all out, double-braiding your hair before letting it fall into a ponytail at the bottom. It’s a great look for when you don’t want to wash your hair that day, and you’ll find dry shampoo will definitely come in handy. Perhaps a great look for the gym? We know you want to look half-decent when you’re working out.
8 – Double Braided + Curly Pony
If you’re trying to take care of your hair, use snag-free elastic bands on your hair, rather than the conventional hair bands you have been using. You may also want to consider not washing your hair more often too. These ponytail looks work so much better on hair that hasn’t been washed in a day or more, and you’ll find that’s the case with many updo’s and curly styles too. Don’t be so quick to wash, ladies. Sometimes it pays to not bother. (Any excuse!)
9 – Low + Bobbled
These ponytail hair ideas are perfect for when you don’t have a lot of time to get ready in the morning. There’s a reason the humble pony has become the go-to look for basically every woman in the world. It’s the greatest starting point for a number of other styles. Just a few more twists and hair grips gives you a messy bun, for example. Start with the pony, and see what happens from there. You can come up with some great and easy hairstyles without even thinking when you’re in a rush sometimes!
10 – Ladder Braid Ponytail
Okay, this one is probably a bit more advanced than your average beginner’s style, but it’s one so beautiful, we feel almost compelled to learn how to recreate it for ourselves. These ladder-braids are really pretty, and you can create some really intricate styles using them. You should definitely check out the Youtube tutorials for this pretty braided look.
11 – Patterned Undercut
Do you remember we discussed the grown-out undercut and side-shaved look? Well, how do you feel about a fresh one? But this time, rather than going for a simple undercut, how about looking at a slightly more detailed shaved style instead? Start with something simple, and then work with your hairstylist for more intricate designs. It’s definitely something we’re thinking of playing around with, how about you?
12 – Low + Wrapped
Here’s a really simple way to update your ponytail – keep two sections free, one at either side of the ponytail – and once you’ve created your pony and placed it in a band, use the braids to wrap over the hair, and pin the trailing ends underneath. It’s simple, effective, and definitely a new take on an old style.
13 – A Little Braided
Once you’ve ponied-up your hair, add a few chunky braids, but don’t go all the way down the hair. If you have some super length on your side, work it into your style, opting for braids and loose-locks, all at the same time. Use clear elastics at the end of the braid to keep the bands hidden, just like you can see here, and also use a strand of your hair to wrap around the base of your ponytail, to hide the up-top hairband too. It’s the simple things that can help to make a new hair look, and when it comes to new ponytail hair ideas, the simple touches could mean everything!
14 – Fishtail Braid It In
If you’re bored of French braiding your hair, you should definitely look at fishtail braiding. It uses four strands of hair, rather than three with the regular Frenchie, but you can still incorporate other sections of hair into it. By learning this, you can update your regular every day styles with a new twist. Once again, it’s all about the little touches.
15 – Faked Ponytail
If you want a ponytail with some “oomph” about it, you need to know about this AMAZING ponytail hack – simply use two ponytails, rather than one. How? One on top of the other one, as close to each other as you can get, that’s how. It’ll instantly make your hair look not only longer, but thicker too. Smart, right? Don’t say we didn’t teach you stuff! alternatively, you could opt for a “faked ponytail”, just adding a hair piece to make your locks longer, thicker, and better-looking.
16 – Big + Bold Braided Pony
Alternatively, when your’e done with your braiding, whether it’s French, fishtail, ladder, waterfall, or any other type of braid that we haven’t learned how to do, pull things apart rather than keeping them tight. We know that you’ve always been told to keep our plaiting and braiding tight, but you can achieve some really pretty and more-relaxed looks by letting things flow a little free. It’s much nicer on your scalp and hair when you opt for looser styles too – all that tightness isn’t good for your locks.
17 – High + Curly
You’ll be amazed by how better your looks with a bit of volume about it, and there are a few ways in which you can fake that volume if your locks don’t have it naturally. Fake hair pieces are one of the easiest options, but if you don’t have those to hand, mousse, hairspray, and some gentle backcombing / teasing will do the trick. Waves and curls also help to inject some oomph too.
18 – Multi-Braided Pony
Another day, another loose braided look. Didn’t we tell you to pull apart your braids and let things flow a little free? This is a classic example of how you can do just that, and still have locks do good that everyone will be asking you about them, all at the same time. Seriously – braiding your ponytail is the new way forward.
19 – Mohawk Dutch Braid Ponytail
Not brave enough for a real mohawk but still want to rock the punk look anyway? You can fake it with braids, and this look shows you how! Even better news than that, there’s a tutorial for the look if you want to try it for yourself. Just click on the image to find out more. We promise you it’s not as difficult as you’d think!
20 – Upside Down Fishtail Braid
You know those baby hairs at the back and bottom of your hair? Well, there’s a simple solution for all those little strays that won’t stay in your high ponytail hair ideas. Why not fishtail braid or French braid them into your ‘do? It’s just a case of flicking your head upside down and doing along the bottom what you would have done along the top. And we think it’s a bloody great idea!
21 – Twist-It Pony
How do you feel about this twist-in pony? For the record, these ponytail hair ideas are much more easily achieved when you give your hair a slightly dirty edge. It helps everything to bond together, and if you don’t have dirty hair (or day-old hair), opt for some dry shampoo to give things a good base. Only a quick spritz is needed, and it really will help things to stay together.
And there you have them – 21 ponytail hair ideas that will liven up that every-day style in no time at all. As we’ve said a few times before, it’s often the simplest of tricks and changes that will make the biggest impact on your ‘do, and these are easy little touches you can add.
Of course, we can’t wait to hear about your favourites, and if you’ve done something that can rival these beauties, make sure you send them into us. You’ll find our Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook links at the top of this page, and we can’t wait to feature your ponytail hair ideas too.
